Yesterday, October 5, 2024, the Bosay Resort Antipolo swimming pool was filled with excitement as the Philswimming Aquatic Showdown Class ABCD took place. Hosted by the Bosay Resort Aquatic Club, the event featured over 17 teams, showcasing a mix of seasoned athletes and rising stars. Despite many swimmers having upcoming periodical exams, their dedication to the sport was evident as they arrived at the venue as early as 5:00 AM to begin warm-ups.
Bosay Resort Aquatic Club’s hardworking Secretary, Lorena Matienzo, expressed her gratitude to the participants and supporters, saying, “We truly appreciate the effort of every swimmer, coach, and parent. Despite the busy schedules, they showed up and gave it their all. This is what makes our swimming community strong.”
The event began officially at 8:00 AM with a solemn prayer and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Swim League Philippines President Fred Ancheta, despite his hectic schedule, attended the meet to deliver a motivational speech. He inspired the young athletes and asked the audience to observe a moment of silence for two beloved swimming coaches, Coach Carlos “Pinky” Brosas and Mario Lao, who had passed away. “Their contributions to swimming have left a lasting impact on the sport we love,” said President Ancheta.
The competition featured swimmers who gave impressive performances in their respective categories. Young talents like Sphene Elliora Clave, David Anthony Arcayan, Layla Bashar Mariy Krishan, Kyle Aidelle Nuñeza, Sophia Poblete, Jordane Porsche Sales, Jesse Cagampang, Eryza Buison, Charles Ezekiel Canlas, Beverly Grace Mendoza, and Arvin Cedric Cantil were among those who stood out, earning the admiration of the crowd.
A notable moment in the meet was the debut of The Pool Predators (Swims & Strokes), a new team coached by Des Vicencio. “This is our first competition,” Coach Des proudly stated. “I’m hoping our novice swimmers will win some medals, but more importantly, I want them to be motivated to train harder and grow in this sport.”
The meet was refereed by Mr. Sonny Villa, with oversight from swimming legend Coach Edgar Galeno, and supported by teachers from DepEd Cainta, led by Sir Randy Ponteres. Their hard work and experience helped ensure the event ran smoothly and fairly, earning praise from participants and organizers alike.
The excitement continued throughout the day, especially during the final event—a squadron freestyle relay—which had the audience cheering loudly as teams raced to the finish.
At the awarding ceremony, the team standings were announced. Aquaventure Giants Swim Team secured the 2nd runner-up position with 1,152 points, while Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, coached by Cris Dela Cruz, took 1st runner-up with 1,226 points. The Bosay Resort Aquatic Club, representing the host team, was crowned the overall team champion with a dominant score of 1,748.50 points.
Lourdes School of Mandaluyong also won the All Boys Team Champion trophy, while the All Girls Team Champion trophy was awarded to Bosay Resort Aquatic Club. These beautiful trophies were generously donated by the Solid Coaches Association Coach Vhine Tengson CEO of Devine’s Works.
Special thanks were extended to event sponsors Bosay Resort, Splash and Dash, and Madwave of Ms. Jovi Astronomo, who beautifully dressed up the pool venue, adding to the festive atmosphere of the competition.
The Philswimming Aquatic Showdown was not just about medals and points; it was a celebration of teamwork, dedication, and the joy of swimming. Many teams stayed overnight at Bosay Resort, taking advantage of the 50% discount on their hotel rooms, allowing swimmers to relax and bond after a long day of competition.
As the swimming community looks forward to more events, Coach Ed Galeno summarized the spirit of the day: “This is just the beginning for many of these young swimmers. Today, they’ve learned what it means to compete, and tomorrow, they’ll be back, stronger and faster.”
With such a successful and competitive meet, the Philswimming Aquatic Showdown has set a high standard for future events, leaving everyone excited for what’s to come.
