Manila—A revered figure in Canadian swimming and a proud product of Philippine sports, Coach Wilfred “Fred” Arzaga has once again made waves—this time not as an athlete, but as one of the most respected swimming coaches in Canada today.

Recently selected to be part of the coaching staff for Canada’s team at the upcoming 2024 World Junior Swimming Championships, Coach Arzaga’s inclusion is a testament to a lifetime of passion, perseverance, and purpose in the pool.

A Lifelong Commitment to the Sport

Coach Arzaga’s journey began in the Philippines, where he swam competitively and later became a national coach. He contributed to international campaigns such as the Asian Games and was an instrumental figure in the development of Filipino swimming talents before migrating to Canada in the 1970s.

In Toronto, he established and now leads the Crest Swimming Team, a small but high-achieving community swim club known for its athlete-first culture. His swimmers have competed at Olympic Trials, national championships, and international meets.

Giving Back to the Roots

Despite his international success, Coach Arzaga never forgot his roots. Every year, he returns to the Philippines to conduct swimming clinics and coaching seminars across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

In addition to sharing his technical knowledge, he brings swimming gear and equipment—such as bathing suits, goggles, personalized swim bags, and stopwatches—which he donates to under-resourced coaches and clubs across the country. His advocacy helps empower the next generation of Filipino swimmers and coaches, especially those from far-flung or underfunded communities.

Recognized by Swimming Canada

Coach Arzaga’s recent appointment to Canada’s World Junior team coaching staff is a reflection of his profound and consistent impact. It’s a recognition not just of his technical excellence, but of his values-driven leadership, which prioritizes both performance and personal growth.

A Global Ambassador for Filipino Excellence

Coach Arzaga’s story is one of legacy, compassion, and excellence. From the pools of Manila to the coaching decks of Toronto, he has shown that sports can bridge cultures and inspire across borders. His life’s work continues to uplift athletes in Canada while nurturing dreams back home in the Philippines.
