HONG KONG – Swim League Philippines (SLP) proudly sent a four-swimmer delegation to compete in “The Last… Last Splash”, an international age-group swim meet hosted by the Hong Kong International School (HKIS) Stingrays from May 24–26, 2025.
The event, which attracted almost 600 swimmers, was a celebration of youth swimming and international friendship. Teams from Japan, China, Singapore, Thailand, Saipan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and host Hong Kong took part in this competitive and spirited gathering. The meet was held at the HKIS’s six-lane 25-meter pool—the same one used for the final time last year—due to delays in the opening of their new eight-lane facility.

Fighting Spirit, Big Hearts
The four swimmers—Jaci Francine Benuya, Tanya Katherine Setias, Jellianne Candice Varilla, and Emmanuel Matienzo—represented the Philippines with heart and determination, guided by Coach Tinii Cayetano.
“Even the 10-and-under kids were excited, focused, and determined to improve. I told them to enjoy the experience and just do their best. They were not intimidated by their bigger, taller competitors—just determined,” Coach Tinii said.

Despite only training for a few months, all four swimmers achieved new personal best times, proving that hard work and mindset truly make a difference. Tanya Setias even topped her heat and won a special “Hot Heats” award.
“Even though we sent a small team this year, the kids fought hard and gained invaluable experience,” said SLP President Fred Ancheta. “We will continue to send more age-group swimmers to international competitions. It’s part of our mission to promote the sport and develop young talent.”

More Than Just Medals: The Power of Age Group Meets
Competitions like “The Last… Last Splash” serve as training grounds not just for racing, but for life. Young athletes learn goal-setting, discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship—valuable traits far beyond the swimming pool.
“Beyond the medals and times, these kids are learning how to handle pressure, how to focus, and how to enjoy the journey,” Coach Tinii reflected.
Even parents benefit from age group meets by bonding with their children over shared goals and experiencing the joy of growth and achievement firsthand.

A Memorable Experience
Swimmers received a commemorative event t-shirt and swim cap printed with “The Last… Last Splash” logo. Coaches were also given their own shirts, lunch coupons, and access to a well-stocked coaches’ lounge—hospitality that made the experience more enjoyable for all involved.
Despite the challenges, the SLP Patriot Team showed that with passion, preparation, and perseverance, Filipino swimmers can rise to the occasion—even on an international stage.
As the Stingrays prepare to open their new facility, Coach David Pool of HKIS expressed hope that future editions of the meet will be even bigger and better. The SLP looks forward to making an even stronger splash next year.
